A performance inspired by Steve Reich’s Pendulum Music composition. Human-power, everyday objects and waste materials were employed to create this interpretation of Reich’s piece. The amplifiers integral to the original composition were exchanged for prostrate people playing home-made instruments and microphones were replaced by swinging bicycle lights. Each performer would allow their instrument to sound only when a light entered their field of vision resulting in a progression from short bursts to longer drones as the pendulums slowed. As well as building their own rudimentary bagpipes, performers made vision-restricting cardboard goggles (which allowed the swinging light to be seen only when directly overhead).
Many thanks to the four performers,
for taking part in this test of endurance.
