Velophase is a bicycle mounted kinetic sculpture which is designed to produce a constantly changing glockenspiel melody as the bike is cycled. After experimenting with a prototype on a bike trailer I built this second pannier rack mounted version.
Two identical four note melodies (taken from the third section of Steve Reich’s Piano Phase composition) are triggered as the two small bike wheels on the sculpture rotate. The wheels spin at slightly different speeds causing the combined melody to continually alter.
When I tested out the sculpture I found that the sound was clearer as the bike was wheeled backwards. I’ll have to make some adjustments -either reposition the glokenspiel notes or mount the device on a pannier rack which can be fitted to the front of a bike.
